 Oboe and Flute
Author: Chris Ransom
Date:   2000-03-28 06:34

I've only just started playing the flute a couple of months ago, but I'm progressing very quickly, and I'm very musical. The leader of my school orchestra wants me to take up the oboe, because she needs an oboe for the orchestra, but my flute teacher tells me that it will ruin my fine muscles in me lips, because of the vibrating reeds.

What shall I do?

Thanks a lot, could you please email a reply?

I agree with your teacher. So, you have to decide which instrument you like the best. I think there are many more flutists, than oboists, so if you like the oboe there should be more professional opportunities in your future.

Do what you want and not what anyone else says. But even if you take up oboe, keep on diligently practicing the flute so you will even get better. Since I play the oboe, I can tell you that it is a lot of fun.

Hi!
I also play flute and have been considering switching to oboe. I think that it would be wonderful to change instruments. Just because you play oboe in the school orchestra does not mean that you have to quit the flute. I for one am going to learn to play as many instruments as possible.

well I feel that the oboe would be more benificial as a music al profession because of the small amount of people who play, and the great importance of the oboe. it probably would ruin your flute playing though so choose what you have the most desire for
hope I helped

Do what u want. I play the oboe. My lips get very sore, especially if u have braces. If u want to play the oboe go ahead. If u don't, just tell the teach u don't want to play.

HI,
I play the flute and oboe and I do well on both. I started playing flute in 5th grade and oboe in 7th if you want to try the oboe you should go ahead. I like the flute more and playing the oboe hasn't ruined my lips I am still as good on flute as our first chair flutist at my school.

I agree with what the other people said. You have to play the instrument that you are most comfortable with. I have played the flute since 5th grade (I'm now in 11th), and I have been playing the oboe for about a year, and I must say that I enjoy the oboe a lot more.
