 Baroque/Classical OBOE Fingerings
Author: Kernan Duke

Hi there!, I am a recorder/ Early music performer, I'd like to expand my forked finger skills to another early music instrument, and would love some input as where to make a scratchy move to fingerings and technique methods for the classical and baroque OBOE..

Are you saying that you would like to know the fingerings for the oboe??? If so, I believe there IS a fingering chart here.

As far as fingering goes, baroque and classical oboe are quite similar to each other, and have rather more in common with recorder than with modern oboe. You would have to learn many new fingerings for early oboes, but your experience playing recorder (especially with cross fingerings) would help you a lot.

... now for the bad news. The greatest challenge with the oboe is learning to control a double reed. This is what makes the oboe a tough instrument to master, and it's even tougher on early oboes. As a recorder player you will be starting from scratch with this, and it will take a lot of dedicated work to produce a reasonable sound, let alone get a decent range of notes, get them in tune and survive a sonata movement without your lips turning to jelly.

Don't let this put you off, though. Early oboes are really wonderful. The baroque oboe particularly has one of the most hauntingly beautiful sounds around - and what repertoire! Get a decent instrument (they're much cheaper than modern oboes) - Dick Earle, Marcel Ponseele and Alfredo Bernardini are among the best makers. Get a good teacher and settle in for a long and very rewarding journey. Good luck!
