what is anyone's opinion on colored instruments? where would you find any?

I don't see a problem with them, but you shouldn't buy an instrument just for the color it is...you need to test it to make sure it actually plays well for you, because many colored instruments are just a gimick and they end up sounding bad. You can check out www.wwbw.com for colored instruments. (If you're looking for an inexpensive colored instrument, my friend bought one of the Yamaha (I believe) colored recorders, and says it plays pretty well.

if you are planning for playing it for a band, ask your director if a different colored instrument would be exceptable, because some one in my band had an old silver colored clarinet and she wasn't allowed to use it because it wasn't black. so ask!

Colored instruments don't make the instrument sound better. But it would be a very wise idea to test one out if you wanted to get one. The color on the instrument just makes it look nicer.

they look cool, specially in marching and like the whole band has instruments to match the school colors, thats sweet. anyways the do look cool but do sound pretty bad a lot of the time so make sure it works for you

Instruments that offer strange finishes as a gimmick most often do so because they are poor in quality.

Jinyin is a company i know of that produces coloured instruments. they are mostly for novalty purposes and not for a serious player. Ebay is a very common place to find a coloured instrument, although you don't know the quality. try asking your local dealer to see if theyc an find a coloured instrument that has high quality. hope this helps.

If you're looking for saxes, I'm pretty sure the company LA Sax has colored versions of saxes (americana, tiger stripes, etc). I've never played an LA Sax, but they seem to have made a name for themselves...test instruments out before you buy them!

Vito make plastic clarinets in a range of colours under the name "Dazzler". As far as I know they play as well as any other Vito plastic clarinet, which is at good student level. They'd certainly be good enough for marching band, but you'd have to check with your band leader whether you'd be allowed use one.

the reviews of L.A. Sax products seem to be mixed. Many site poor construction as their greatest dissabpointment.
