 Guitar Playing

Okay, I have tried and failed several times to learn guitar...I just can't get the hang of it. I think that my main problem is that piano and woodwinds are more linear in fingerings...you know, straight up and down. The whole jumping from side to side to get different notes confuses me. Any woodwind players out there who also play guitar ever have this problem? Any tips to help me out?

go over chords all the time, and do scales. what kind of guitar playing are you wanting to do, classical, rock, jazz? be best to go over blues chords to. if you want to do classical, i suggest a private instructor, the way you use you fingers is intense and can get some getting used to. for classical, your pinky is for high E and for hitting the guitar. and your thumb is for the top two strings, the other fingers go to corresponding strings inbetween. i believe this is it, i could be wrong, it's been awhile. hope this helps.

Most right-hand finger plucking patterns use thumb, index, middle and ring finger, but not the little finger. The standard abbreviations are:

P = thumb
I = index
M = middle
A = ring

I believe the letters come from Spanish or Italian. So a plucking pattern could be indicated by PIMA PIMA or PIMAMI PIMAMA.

Left hand is where you'll find the most problems. Scales are the key. Just keep at them and eventually the position of the notes on the frets will become second nature.

The easiest way to start out is to hang out with others who play guitar and learn from them until you get comfortable with it to learn in whatever style you enjoy the best.
