Music Education for elementary/secondary school, and a music degree (usually Bachelor and Masters of Music, often DMA) for the collegiate level.

you can also do your bachelor's in music for the 4 years, and then if your university has it, do a 2 year after degree in education, which should allow you to teach in a high school.
To acheive your goal, you have to know what you want. What qualities/skills did you admire most in your best teacher/s? These are what you should work at developing.

bachelor of music and an education degree. the university in my city has a combined degree that takes 5 years. theory is important, you need to understand music, how it is put together. you'll need to know your instruments, how to play them, and in some cases fix. conducting, this sounds dumb, but it actually harder to do then it looks, to get the movement for all the times, 4/4 3/4 2/2 6/8 etc. these are some things to work on. hope this helps.

Conducting in 4/4, 3/4, 2/2, 6/8 isn't the hard stuff. . . it's when you get to 5/8, 7/16, 1/16 etc that's tough!! But that's what college is for- to learn how to do these things. I would recommend going to a university that has a MUSIC EDUCATION program. Other schools can teach you music and education, but teaching music isn't like teaching reading or math. Without a music education program, how can you learn to teach music? Plus a Bachelor of Music Education is generally a 4-4.5 year program versus getting two separate degrees in 5-6 years, saving time and money.
