Just wondering if anyone has ever played the bass oboe part in Holst's planets suite, as I've got to but have never played a bass oboe before, so any tips on how to would be great! thanks.

I played a bass oboe and I own one. It's the same fingering as an oboe, and it plays one octave below oboe.
It has a bocal to help you to have a good tune, and the reed is similar as the E.H. (only a little bit bigger); it's not like a bassoon's one.
It's sound is really fantastic and warm, simply one of the best instruments to play!
I never played Holst pieces, I found them in internet as midi files and they are beautiful. I can tell my director to play them!!

wow, are they real expensive too though?
all I've played is an oboe, always wanted to play some other double reed though; eng. horn, oboe d'amore, bass oboe, bassoon ~ has anyone ever played a shawm? is it actually like an oboe? just b/c you see them in the oboe/bassoon section and i've wanted to see about them too. heh, can't wait to get money and get some new instruments!!! yay double reeds!!!!

We played Jupiter recently. Although I wanted very much to play the bass oboe part, renting one for a week was about $250 (no joke). Since it is in the same key as oboe, you could have an oboe player play it. In our orchestra, we transcribed the part to Bb and had a tenor sax play it. Have fun!
