 Flute Multiphonics
Author: Chris Nauroth

I was just reading about the Massive Multiphonics project. I have been playing flute for a few years, but I have never produced two tones simultaneously. I imagine it's quite difficult, but I was hoping someone here might be able to give me some assistance as a jumping-off point. How about a fingering or two and a description of other adjustments I would need to make? (breathing, etc...) I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi Sergey,
Hey guy hang in there, been there done that and got the t-shirt! I started playing flute in the 4th grade. and up intil the 10th or the 11th grade I got teased bad. I've heard all the jokes about playing the 'skin flute' and are you gay stuff. The frend that I had that were in band asked why I wanted to play flute? Why not play trumpet or sax with them? I looked at it this way, I'm sitting next to the girls that all my freinds are trying to get a date with and I get to talk to them every day!( the girl I dated and then married, play the drums!!! so much for sitting with the girls up front.) People will eventually grow-up and not bother you any more. Hang in there and don't give up.
Any questions you want to ask, just go ahead and E-mail me. I'll be glad to help.

Mike

p.s. I'm 40 years old and still play my flute, ( along with my alto flute, alto & tenor sax, Irish tin whistles, recorders, clarinet, trombone and trumpet. Play one and you can play them all!!

A place to start to describe multiphonics: play your f2, and then don't support your tone so well. You start to switch to an f1, but not entirely- you still hold onto the f2. Voila- you are playing ttwo notes, although they're the same fingering, just different octaves. This is something like the multiphonics stuff. However, i myself am rather new to the subject.
i ahve been playing 6 years and sadly, have only ever played with one male player. however, several of my band instructors have been great at flute, and they were all male. i hope to see some more guys on glute.

There is nothing wrong with boys playing the flute. I am almost sure a great flutist like James Gallway(I am sure I spelled that wrong) was ridiculed somewhat as a boy. Frederic the Great, a ruler of Austria in the 18th century,
paid Mozart to write flute concerti, which he played. The flute is great instrument and just because it seems like every girl just HAS to play it, does not mean boys can't
