Harmonic and melodic scales are only for minor scales.
I usually use a simple way to find minor from a major: I subtract 3 flats from major (example: C major - no flats nor sharps, C minor - 3 flats; D major - 2 sharps, D minor 1 flat). I say that if you have sharps, you have to take away sharps before and then add flats, but only 3 times.
About the order of sharps and flats the one you wrote is for flats; for sharps turn the order of flats as I show:
BEADGCF
FCGDAEB

Hope this helps

Every major key has a relative minor key which has the same key signature. To find the relative minor, go down three semitones (UK english for half-tones). So the relative minor of C major is A minor. If you have a minor key and want to know the relative major, you go up three semitones. So the relative major of C minor is Eb, hence the 3 flats mentioned by Davide.

Different scales are used when writing melody or harmony in minor keys, hence melodic & harmonic minor scales. For melodic minor, the ascending and decending patterns are different. You start on the key note and ascend as if you are in the relative major, but raise the 6th and 7th notes by a semitone. When decending, the 7th and 6th are played as per the relative major. So A minor melodic goes A B C D E F# G# A for ascending, A Gnat Fnat E D C B A for decending

Harmonic minor scales are used when writing harmony in minor keys. The pattern is the same ascending and decending. You start on the key note and ascend as per the relative major, but this time only raise the 7th. So A minor harmonic goes A B C D E F G# A G# F E D C B A. Note the wierd augmented 2nd interval at the top of the octave.

Ever asked a simple question and got more of an answer than you bargained for?
