A sarrusophone is like a metal bassoon. It is a double reed instrument made of metal. It is designed to be used in marching bands and as far as I know comes in a number of different sizes. Although double reed such as the oboe, cor anglais and bassoon are common in the orchestra, they are distinctly absent from the band scene. Even the sarrusophone is virtually extinct.

How many sarrusophone players does it take to change a lightbulb?

Both of them!

In most US bands, the oboe, english horn, and bassoon are alive and well. They are used regularly in what we refer to as concert bands. For marching bands, though, players of these instruments will switch to something else.

Sarrusophones are very interesting instruments, and if you ever get a chance to hear them, you will agree. One hundred years ago, the contra-bass sarrusophone threatened to make the contra-bassoon obsolete
