Are you expected to be very good at sight reading or is it just one of those things that is good to know how to do very well? What are some other things that are mandatory of musicians in college?

if you are going for a music degree, your sight reading would have to be fairly well. you should at least sight read a grade 3 piece. it's also a good skill to have. if you forget to practise, you can fake it in a rehersal. try getting new music and playing it. not as fast as the music recommends, and see you well you can play it. another way to improve is to have a friend with you while you play. you play the music and he/she holds a piece of paper scrolling along the music in time. you'll find that you need look ahead to play. hopefully that made sense. hope this helps.
