 MULTI-PHONICS Fingerings
Author: Daniel J. Loeb

I was very dissapointed when i came here to see that there was not a section for saxophone multi-phonic fingerings. For those of you who don't know, a multi-phonic note is playing two tones simultaneously on a non chordal instrument such as a saxophone. I don't know many, and the ones that I do know, I have a lot of difficultly hearing which two or three (or more) tones I am playing since playing them at all, much less in tune, is very difficult and the sound is very rough even when you get it right. There are new multi-phonic fingerings being discovered all the time, and if you have a site dedicated to woodwind fingerings, it seems rediculous NOT to have a multi-phonics section where people can post fingerings, the moderator of this site can check and see if they work, and what notes they are, and post them as they're verified. I have heard only one saxophone player use multi-phonics fluently in his playing, and it's one of the coolest sounds I've ever heard come out of a saxophone (when it's done right and tastefully).

There is no reason to be so critical of the site manager. He/she gets nothing out of creating and managing this site but personal satisfaction. If no one has submitted multiphonic fingerings, then there won't be any posted. As for that why don't you just go out and buy a book on this subject. There have been some written and via the web, it's pretty easy to buy them if you can't find them locally.

I hardly feel that lacking a multiphonics chart for saxophone is 'ridiculous.' The WFG does not claim to contain every variety of fingering for every woodwind instrument. However, if a few people would submit some multiphonics fingerings along with a description of the notes they play, I will add a chart to this site. Check out http://www.wfg.sneezy.org/submit.html for information on sending me fingerings for inclusion in this site.

I would appreciate multi-phonics fingerings. I play flute, and feel I have nowhere new to go with my flute. Different echniques and "tricks" are always fun to try- such as playing a slide;like sound on a flute.

I agree with Dan Loeb in that there should be multi-phonics charts here. that would be most enjoyable.
