Are the parts for this musical too terribly crazy? I dont currently have an alto flute/soprano sax, but i'm playing picc., flute and clarinet <and maybe transpose the soprano parts to alto or tenor>

I played the show last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.
You need all 5 instruments. Do not transpose them to another instrument. Get/borrow an alto flute and soprano sax.
If you transpose the parts, the wind voicings will lose their character (ex -low alto flute notes, jazzy soprano sax licks, etc...) When you listen to the cast recording you'll especially notice how important the alto flute is.
It's a great show and being the only wind instrument, you are constantly juggling horns, but it's great fun.
BTW - If you plead your case about the importance of the alto flute, the production company might just rent you one for the run of the show...GBK

Are the piccolo parts really exposed, or are they in a decent playing range? And are the alto parts by chance double staffed for flute if I can't get a hold of an alto?

Yes (ex:" Mama Will Provide") ...but ALL the wind parts are, including nice unaccompanied solos for clarinet ("Ti Moune") , alto flute ( "Some Girls") and soprano sax ("Why We Tell The Story").

If I remember correctly the piccolo goes up pretty high. Probably to a written G6 or A6.

Well, the theatre is actually going to rent an alto for the show, and they also have somneone else playing the clarinet parts, but they dont know about the soprano sax parts yet so she and I are both bringing our saxes to figure out the sax parts.

First rehearsal was last night and it went well. It turns out that Im playing the picc flute and alto flute and the other reed player is playing clarinet and soprano saxophone. its really a cool show.

I'm doing this show and was wondering what set-up you used on your sop sax specifically for this gig? I just got a curved bell Yanigasawa SC922 that is awesome but I'm not pleased with the Mpc (Yani) Of course the rico 2 reed it came with doesn't help!
It would be helpful to know what works best with all the embouchure changes on the 5 instruments from someone who's played the show.
I'm playing an Eddie Daniels Mpc on a Yamaha Custom Artist's Edition Clr. with a VanDoren Optimum lig, I've already found that changing from a 3 to a 2 Alexander superial reed helps. (When I play my alto/tenor sax along with the clar. I always use a 3 reed so I can see where the flute family is already effecting my embouchure!)
In addition, The conductor found an alto flute to rent but it was too expensive for the month ($150) so is now looking for a cheaper one - we open in 2 weeks and I've yet to play it so that's been a huge concern as well! I'm hoping it will be a curved headjoint since I'm just 5'3 with short arms and small hands!!! Fortunately the score is not too difficult and the song with the most work - "Rain" is on Flute.

It was a Vito, and beyond that I don't remember the rest of the set up. Sorry! But it is truly a great show to play. And, yes, "Rain" is probably as bad as it gets, but some of those alto solos are pretty long. My favorite songs were "Prologue/We Dance", "Mama Will Provide", and "The Ball." The alto isnt too terribly hard to get used to, but the addition of a curved HJ is a relief! As far as switches go, there are a lot of them from piccolo to alto flute and vice verse. Then there are some tricky soprano sax to flute changes, and clarinet to flute(s) transitions as well. Good luck!
