 Case Poll
Author: ClariTone

hello

Been awhile since anyone posted, so I'll start a new one!!!

Do you use single cases for your doubles (triples, quadruples...you get the idea...) or do you own a double/triple case(s)??

Personally I use single cases, but have thought about getting a double or triple case. Care to list the pros and cons of each???

Thanks!!!
Clayton

I use single cases and put them in a large leather briefcase that contains all of my equipment accessories. This gives me more flexibility in the amount of equipment I take to a gig or practice. Another reason is that I don't have a typical kind of Bb-A or Bb-A-Eb combination. I mostly use Bb & C sopranos and bass in addition to tenor saxophone and sometimes flute.

I've considered multi-cases like the Selmer sax, flute, clarinet case but opted for the individual and lighter travel cases. My wife has a double clarinet case she uses all the time. Since it only has an effer and a beffer, the whole rig is not too heavy.

I have a tray-pac case for both my alto and tenor. Each one fits a sax, clarinet and flute. I can also slide my piccolo case in there, too, if the gig calls for it. And I still have room for my sax stand!

I also just bought an oboe/English horn double case for those horns.

The advantages are obvious. You have one handle to carry, and one case to keep track of. The only disadvantage is that it is heavy.

I have a feeling that once you graduate to a double/triple case, you will never go back.

I use the ProTec tri-case for alto/Bb clar/flute. With the three instruments in there, it's still lighter than my old Selmer case with the sax in it.

The advantage to this type of case is that if I'm not using clarinet or flute, they are in individual cases that I can leave behind.

It's really a good deal for carrying the instruments around!!

...all the while the poor baritone sax player has to haul (usually) three or four cases (and sometimes five) s to each job, as there's no "Traypac" available for the baritone, or bass clarinet (at least not for my bass clarinet). So, not only do the horns we carry weigh more, but they are locked into individual box shipping methods due to no commercially available cases to combine them.

The only concession that I've ever seen here is that the Yamaha baritone cases have a slot that fits a classic low B foot flute case in same. Even so, I toted my flute box separately for a year before I put two and two together and discovered the nifty fit afforded.

I've investigated fabricating my own (out of carved blocks of polyethylene foam in a custom made case "box", but it's a lot of money with no guarantee of success, and no incentive beyond getting my own to do the work. So, instead I just use a cart a lot.

Now, after you take care of the baritone Traypac issue, you can start on the baritone sax stand with spots for flute and clarinet pegs. Don't bother looking for one, as there are none to be had...

I know that this is a case poll, but...

If you are looking for a baritone sax stand of outstanding quality and can accomodate (spelling...sorry) flute and clarinet and up to two additional pegs, check out SaxRax stands. They are designed a little differently than the regular sax stands so there are people who despise them, but I happen to think the world of them. I swear by my bari sax stand and have often used it with the clarinet and flute peg, AND the alto sax peg. Check them out, if you have not already.

Oh...and btw....

Depending on the combination called for, I use either my traypak alto case OR go with the individual cases. I do want to pick up a multiclarinet case for my bass and B-flat, and flute. Oh yeah...and that Reunion Blues case that hold an alto and soprano together....

Oy. It never stops does it?

...unless you use a SaxRax bari stand, which will take their peg adapters. You can even put both pegs on the right of the bari, so you don't hit the small horns with the big one.

I did a production recently where I played 6 horns - flute/picc/clar/bs. clar/alto/soprano. The flute went in the external pocket on the Protec alto case, and the picc fit inside my bass clarinet case. That meant four cases to carry, though with the alto and clarinet over the shoulder, I had one case in each hand, along with a stand bag.

i only use single cases because i rarely have an occasion where i need more than one instrument in one sitting. sure, i may be bringing four different instruments to school for one day, but 1. i use them each for a different ensemble, and 2. i don't think my instrument locker could fit a double or triple case. but hey, if i go on a trip and know that i need to bring more than one instrument, i might build myself a suitable case! or somehow pack some single cases in an actual suitcase or something. hm, something to think about...

Hi,

I just got my ProTec tri-case for alto/Bb clarinet/flute (after a back-ordered wait from WWBW). I had talked to Erik above and he gave me all the specifics. Thanks again, Erik.

A really nice setup. This is something I have been trying to find for some time.
