 Thoroughly Modern Millie

Anyone played this?

Pitfalls to watch out for?

BTW - it's a small production, so we're covering all four books with 2 players...

I went and saw this one in Springfield MO last school year with the Tri-M chapter of my high school and had a blast!!! The show was good, and the music was fabulous. Nice woodwind parts. Not sure of any pitfalls, hopefully the ground will stay level for y'all [grin]Best of Luck!!!Clayton

OK...I've found a few traps in the clarinet solos and flute solos.

I hate High E and F# on flute.

I'm with you Merlin... on hating high E and F# on flute. And it always kills me in Broadway shows how often the composer calls for a LONG trill from high G to A, which is a horrific trill to play well even when it's a short one. When I encounter this trill I always try to find a way to do it on piccolo instead (at pitch, I mean). Good luck with those E's and F#'s.

I'm kind of courious as to how this show is. The high school I work at is putting this on in a few months and I have already been told I'm playing either reed 1 or 2, and I have to get a few of the students ready to fill some of the other books. If anybody has any ideas as to what to look out for that would be great.

I'm going to be playing the reed I part this semester at school. I have seen it live on Broadway and I enjoyed it. Has anyone done the reed I part before? What instruments does it primarily feature?

Reed 1 has the lead Alto parts, clarinet, soprano sax, flute and piccolo.

Anybody who has played this able to give a breakdown as to what are the strong parts on each of the reed books?

Reed 1 has the lead alto and soprano lines, and some slightly twisted flute and picc lines.

Reed 3 has all of the oboe parts - the Speed Test opens with a high exposed solo.

Reed 2 has all of the tricky clarinet parts.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to hope they hire another guy for reed 1 and shoot for reed 2

Merlin, do you think the reed 3 and/or reed 4 books are playable for a high school kid? The reed 4 book sounds more exposed than reed 3 (other than the oboe stuff) what's your oppinion?

Honestly, I don't know of a high school kid that could properly cover any of the books in that show.

So I guess I have to either edit the books or recomend that they hire some guys for the books. Any other tips on the show or huge things to look for in it?

I have a question about this show: it has a very large pit, but if we could only fit a set amount of people on stage due to space constraints, which parts would you feel would be the most important ones to have?

I have played in damn few shows that had a vital need to retain the tenor sax/clarinet book down around the Reed IV or so. And, realistic considerations usually mean a harp part and the double reed parts get left by the wayside as well. At that point, it's time to start chopping desks of violins...

how close to the broadway soundtrack is this show to play? If it is very close to the broadway soundtrack then all 4 reed books have fairly importiant parts. I've played a bunch of shows where some of the reed books are split up by folks already on a book, for example I played a production of the wizard of oz where the first act I played almost excluseively from the reed 3 book and then the entire second act from the oboe book. I have also seen where the entire string section minus the bass book was given over to a keyboard player with a good strings patch. I've seen the horn book go unplayed in a ton of shows as well as the trombone book often ignored in shows as well. a lot can be done by re working parts and players.

i am playing this musical now with a local company. i am on reed 3. i really, really tried to get the oboe part down, but i wound up just transposing it for clarinet. i need to spend some quality time with the oboe, i think...it is that darn high D...

it is fun music though.

I'd like to learn how to play oboe somtime, I just have never gotten around to it. In the production I was in, the person on the reed 3 part was a clarinet/sax player so she ended up transposing it as well. There just aren't that many double reed players on my campus, especially those that also double on sax and clarinet

The music is definetely fun though

yeah, for the 3 or 4 songs on oboe you can get away with it on flute or the reed 1 and 2 books have it cued.

A community theater is doing this near me July 2008. Can 2 woodwind doublers cover the 4 reed parts? And how tough is the flute parts in Reed 1?

2 might be doable, but I would recomend 3 players if possible. the reed 2 book is 90% of your lead clarinet while reed 1 is a lot of sax leads with a few of the clarinet solos. reed 3 is the lead sop sax book with the oboe and all the t.sax parts and bass clarinet parts. I covered reeds 3 and 4 with not a ton of trouble. I found that reed 4 was only desperately needed in a few of the first act songs and rarely in act 2. If you have a t-bone player it would help. I think it would be rough to try to double up reed 1 and 2 with one player since there are some duets and interrunning parts. with 3 players you get a lot of the harmonies and building parts in the reed books covered. The reed 3 and 2 books have a duet in the chart they don't know, the only song i had to go between books on was the nuttycracker sweete starting on bass clarinet and going to bari sax for the back half of the song. I lucked out that the reed 1 player covered as much of the cued oboe stuff as he could leaving me to play the reed 4 stuff for the speed test to help the lower sections of the group. try for 3 players and a t-bone if you can. good luck

Well. the books have arrived. AND...we are going to attempt it with 2 reed players. The other "multi-reedist" and I went the 4 books along with listening to the original Broadway cast recording. We went thru what is needed most when. We will each have 6 instruments in front of us. First rehearsal is Thursday, July 3. Stay tuned. More to come.

Opening Night is tonight. It has worked out pretty well with 2 of us covering the 4 books. The only thing missing is some of the harmony richness with the clarinet and sax soli passages. If you have not played this show, and get the opportunity, do not say NO. The music is some of the most challenging from every perspective but well worth the time spent. I would definitely play this one again.
