I did a run of 'The Producers' a little while back with an excellent cast who both made the week fun and also took any mishaps in their stride and made the most of them when they happened. I'll look forward to working with them again in the future.
But during a scene in the geriatrics' home I was playing a nice little waltz as an oboe solo. But then after the second night I got more and more aware of the ongoing dialogue on stage instead of concentrating wholly on what I was playing and could hear the old biddies talking about a Chihuahua.
Then I heard what they were on about and that was it - I burst out laughing right during my solo as I wasn't expecting to hear what I heard and couldn't play for the rest of the number as I was laughing too much.
That set me off at that exact same point for the next couple of nights, but I managed to keep playing but with a much wider vibrato than normal due to laughing at the same time.
So after that I had to force myself to try not listen to the dialogue and play the solo without creasing up. So sometimes it's good to know what's going on on stage whilst you're playing, but other times it's best to be oblivious just in case you hear something that sets you off.

I had a big problem with that during the Springfield Muni's Beauty and the Beast-- I missed a few entrances thanks to that
Seriously though, I have had to work on that, because the musical I'm currently doing has some FUNNY dialogue!
