 Alto sax mouthpiece for doubler

Hi,

I'm an oboe/english horn player who doubles on sax. We used to have a wonderful shop here where you could try different mouthpieces, etc. and the prices were great. Sadly, this shop has closed and there is no other shop in the area where I'm able to experiment with different setups like I was able to in the past. Anyhow, I have an Otto Link mouthpiece that I really like for my tenor and I would now like to find a new mouthpiece for my alto. The list of mouthpieces, sizes, etc. is overwhelming. Not sure where to start. I heard a great sax player last night playing on an older Mark VI and he sounded amazing. I asked him what mouthpiece he used and it was custom made, but I don't remember the name. (He told me twice and I still forgot, should have written it down.) Anyhow, I play on Vandoren ZZ reeds (usually 2 1/2 or 3) or the Rico Jazz Select reeds (3 soft) which I really like. I guess I want to emulate that classic Mark VI sound that isn't two bright or edgy, but can really project if you want it too. I still have some confusion regarding facings and baffle, not really sure what to go with there. I may try an Otto Link again. I don't get tired easily since I play oboe and english horn, so my endurance is pretty good, but I don't like hard reeds or a lot of resistance because if you play a 3-4 hour gig, it can be hell if you're playing on a hard reed. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start? I just have a standard vandoren mouthpiece right now. It's not bad I guess, but I would like to experiment with different mouthpieces. I play a Selmer sax, but it's not a Mark VI, still a decent horn though.

Just remembered, the mouthpiece that he played ( the sax player I heard with the Mark VI) is a drake. Not sure what model though.

By the way, saxes (and sounds) that I love are vintage Selmer Mark VI. 5 digit, maybe 6 something, and Conn Chu Berry. Love the sound of those horns, the low notes seem to come out so effortlessly, not brash or harsh, but like velvet.

Try a Vandoren V16 mpc with a medium chamber and a reasonable tip~0.75
Best production mpc today in the vein of a Meyer (better than today's Meyers) and used by many pros. VERY REASONABLE PRICE!
