Has anyone played this one? Looks like we are going to go with the reduced orchestration, the one with 2 reed books, the 1st being SAT saxes and flute. Any comments?

I played it a long time ago, using 2 players to cover 4 books (there were supposed to be 3 players, but 1 had to bow out). If you're even moderately experienced with shows, it should not be terribly hard for you. I recall the original cast album as being a good reference. There's one unusual challenge: no intermission (at least as it's written), which can be a long 2 hours depending on how you're feeling that night.

This is show #25 or 26 for me...I can't recall exactly which. Sounds like it won't be a major effort. Sometime intermissions get in the way and break the momentum. Thanks for the info.
It sounds like you did the original orchestration. As I stated above, we are doing the reduced orchestration that has only 2 reed books (I may be covering both; if so, all 6 of my instruments will be needed).
Thanks again.

I played GH two years ago. I was the only reed player, and we combined books I, II, and III of the original, full instrumentation. I selected the most important parts from each book, and that ended up being alto sax, clarinet, flute, soprano sax, and English horn.
As I recall, it wasn't terribly difficult. I remember a somewhat tricky, fast-tongued clarinet part in one of the scenes. But if you concentrated hard, it was doable. I don't know if you play EH or not, but two pieces had some really sweet EH parts that I looked forward to playing each night. And I think it had a fun, jazzy and prominent soprano part in one song.
I'm not familiar with the reduced instrumentation version, so I don't know how yours will end up compared to what I did. I imagine it is similar.
What I can say is that the music is really good. When I do a show in which I've never heard the music before, it usually takes me a while to warm up to the score. But I liked the music to GH the first time I heard it.
