Has anyone had any experience with this musical? In terms of difficulty/fun/potential challenges for either reed book? I've heard reed 1 is alot of tricky flute/piccolo playing, which makes reed 2 seem more likely for me, as flute isn't one of my strong points.
1: Piccolo, flute, alto saxophone
2: Clarinet, bass clarinet, baritone saxophone
Thanks!
EDIT: I also may be called on to play Thoroughly Modern Millie, does anyone know the distribution of each instrument in the reed 3 book? Oboe, clarinet, soprano&tenor sax. (Oboe being my primary, i'm hoping that's what is mostly called upon in the book.)

My daughter played Thoroughly Modern Millie earlier this year for her high school, and played Reed 3. She is also an oboe player, equal with sax. (It was her first musical and I helped coach her; that's why I'm familiar with the music). She was disappointed with the relatively few measures given to oboe and to soprano sax. There is one important oboe solo in around the 7th song where the oboe plays like a typewriter. She found that a lot of fun. There were a couple of other short solos, but they couldn't be heard as well (they didn't mike her). On the Broadway recording we have there is a nice oboe solo in the overture, but in her production they let the flute player play it too (she was playing only flute and didn't have many parts), which rather spoiled the solo. There were a few fun lines on soprano sax that she really liked. But in total, about 90% of Reed 3 is played on clarinet and tenor sax. Oboe has the fewest measures.
She really enjoyed the musical however and wishes she could play it again.

Having played MILLIE in 2008, oboesax summarized reed 3 very well. Reed 1 is the principal flute chair with just enough piccolo to make it worth while bringing with you. Some lead alto and soprano parts and some fun clarinet stuff. Reed 2 is the lead clarinet chair with a bit of flute along with soprano and alto sax soli stuff. Reed 4 has some great bass clarinet passages but besides that, is not that important.
