My question concerns my 14-year old daughter, who has pain in her left hand and the joint of the middle finger on that hand. I'm hoping some of you have some experience/knowledge with this.
I believe that the pain in her hand has been brought on with the resumption of school 9 days ago, with all the writing and computer usage that's required. Of course practicing instruments will contribute to the usage. Right now she's unable to write or practice without a lot of pain. I do plan to take her to see a doctor with a hand specialty and have an appointment, but I'd also like to know what musicians' experiences have been.
She's been playing the alto sax for 5 1/2 years, the oboe for 5 years, and the bassoon seriously for 6 months. She takes her practicing seriously and attended music camps this summer for five weeks. At one camp she was playing about 9 hours of a sax a day, with no hand pain.
She is left-handed and writes likes a "lefty", curving her hand all the way inward. This evening she started writing with her right hand instead and, although slow, was able to write right away. She may switch permanently.
She's had pain in her left wrist before, every year when school resumes, but never before in her third finger joint.
The pain this week was triggered a few days ago after/during the 1st rehearsal of a new orchestra where she is playing bassoon. I thought perhaps that holding up the bassoon that long might have make a pre-existing condition worse, so I ordered a harnass for the bassoon.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
