 Man of La Mancha!!

I have heard that the next musical at my school will be Man of La Mancha, and I was wondering if any of you who have possibly played it could tell me about the lead clarinet book ie difficulty level, solo(s)?, overall importance in the orchestra? I eagerly await any and all responses. Thank you in advance!

I did the show twice, playing the lead clarinet part. I can't remember specific parts per se, but the fact that I don't makes me think that it wasn't terribly difficult. You will encounter plenty of odd time signatures, though.

You're in for a treat--it has some of the most haunting and beautiful music I've ever played in the pit!

Oh that's good news. Yes, I've listened to some of the music. There are a TON of woodwind solos! Especially oboe. What were your observations about the second clarinet book? According to Tams-Witmark it is a clarinet/bassoon book. Is it mostly bassoon or clarinet? I ask because the girl I asked to play the book only plays clarinet.

I got hired to do it in a reduced-pit situation using one reed and two brass players, and the music director had gone through and decided what he wanted played. I think I spent a lot more time on picc and oboe than on clarinet. That said, I don't remember anything in the show being technically difficult. There was some moderately high picc stuff, but that's about it.

In the two productions I played in, they didn't have anybody playing the second clarinet book, so there was no bassoon player.

Interesting Mike W. Did you have a french horn? Our pit probably will not include a French Horn so I'm wondering how it will affect the quality of the music. Jaysne, how did it go without a bassoon player? Aren't there quite a few bassoon solos/features?

Funny you should ask: the pit consisted of guitar, bass, percussion & 3 winds: me (picc, flute, clarinet & oboe), French Horn (doubling trumpet) and French Horn. At a community theater level, it's always something of 'it is what it is' because there is never money (and depending on the theater, space) for a full pit.

I don't know if the bassoon was supposed to be a featured instrument. My guess is that if it was, the piano player probably filled in those parts.

I was privileged to play the 2nd Clarinet book in a military production in Japan back in 1991. Although I play bassoon, I didn't have one at the time, so I transposed the bass clef to e-flat treble clef and (with a few adjustments) played the bassoon parts on alto sax. If your clarinet player has access to an alto clarinet, the same might be possible for her.

Now that I've managed to get another bassoon (and it's been YEARS) since I've played - I'd love to have the opportunity to play the part again on the right horns.
