25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Hi Everybody,

I'm looking at doing a production of this play in a couple of months. Can anybody tell me what doubles are involved. I'm thinking that this must be one of those off-Broadway sextet scores.

Hi,

Have any of you played this show?
There's an oboe multiphonic at the beginning of "Jesus," and I have no idea what to do. I'm very new to the oboe so this isn't quite something I have learned yet.
The notes included from bottom to top are G (in the staff), C, F, A.

Any ideas?

thanks -

Adrienne

I'm doing the show next month. Getting a multiphonic on oboe is no problem for me....most of the notes I play on oboe come out as multiphonics!

The oboe part is small but appears exposed....I'm hoping to get by with soprano sax.

FrankM,

Let me know how the soprano works on the oboe parts as I might have the opportunity to do this show March-April 2010. I don't play oboe but could cover the whole book if soprano is a suitable substitute.

I have not rehearsed the show yet, but I have the book in front of me. The oboe part amounts to no more than a few phrases here and there. Most of the book is alto sax/Bb clarinet, with a smattering of flute.

I was given a cd of the show and though the oboe parts are few, they are exposed and do impart a certain "flavor" or feel to the action. My director has her heart set on oboe. After she hears me at the first rehearsal, I'm pretty certain that soprano sax will suffice!

I just finished "Spelling Bee". It was very funny and the music was fun to play. Re: the oboe parts, I really wish I could have pulled them off on oboe. The tunes that use oboe are sort of fantasy sequences and I think oboe would have added to the effect. Be that as it may, my oboe is not ready for public consumption....I did the parts on flute.
