 Buzz or no buzz?

When I took a horn tech class at the local university, the professor (a pro hornist) said that contrary to popular belief, horn players do not buzz their lips; rather, you keep the lips firm while emitting a steady stream of air.

Every method book I've seen since then has said yes you buzz your lips just like a trumpet player.

Whaddya think?

I played the horn as a teenager and I play the trombone (badly) now.

I believe that lip technique is very similar on all brass. You press the lips lightly against the mouthpiece, and blow through them, parting them slightly.

If you just blow, nothing happens.

If you deliberately make vulgar noises, nothing (musical) happens.

It's somewhere in between.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Beginner here. I just watched and listened to a utube of a lady teacher playing "lips, mouthpiece, horn". Basically buzz playing fourths going down the scale and then back up. It was both boring and fascinating. I can't yet do it, but daily will be working on it.
