... always tend to sit with their legs crossed while playing?
I don't think anyone would be too happy what with me being a bloke if I'm sat with my legs crossed during a concert, but I might start doing that to get the point across that it looks stupid or inappropriate. I might as well have a pint and a cigarette going as well as it looks that bad.

And what's wrong with me having a pint while playing with my legs crossed?

I play in an ensemble of 60 people. The female flutist next to me always plays with her legs crossed, the others have their feet flat on the floor. The conductor has made several comments for her to put her feet flat on the floor but they always come up again later in the rehearsal.
It doesn't look professional especially in a concert and it creates tension, which might interrupt your air flow.

Haha.. i don't have an answer.. but i also feel an awful lot more comfortable sitting with my leg crossed over! during my life, many a teacher has criticised me for it. And yet.. there is a feeling of 'nakedness' .. not quite the word, but i don't have a better word.... when your two feet are flat on the floor.

I doubt if many players who like to cross their legs actually keep their legs crossed during a concert. It is the conductor's responsibility to tell the group how he wants them to appear during concert. If he is shirking his responsibility, well it wouldn't be the first time. The conductor in our band doesn't care how the band comes off. He only cares if he doesn't come off looking good himself.
If it bugs you so much, point it out yourself.

there is definitely something about the "naked" feeling comment. I am the same
Regarding the pint and cigarette... Marcel moyse's embouchure, definitely appears like he could slip a pipe on the head joint end of his mouth....

When Moyse was 94, he gave a master class in Valencia, CA at the Institute of the Arts. While sitting and commenting on the performances, he smoked his very large pipe.
