Is changing a Powell with "straubingers" to a trad felt pad an alright thing to do? I'm sure it would make the instrument a little less bright , but otherwise what has been your experiences. Thank you

No experience in the area, but I'm sure the effect will be minimal.

May I suggest you call Powell and ask them?

By the way, my friend Wendy just got her 1950 Powell flute back from Powell after they did a complete overhaul, including soldering five tone hole chimneys back on the flute. She elected to use traditional skin flute pads on the advice of a very prominent flutist in Los Angeles for several reasons. I concur as I do my own flute repair and am not qualified to install Straubinger pads. The Powell company did a wonderful repair job and the instrument plays and looks like new. The price was fine.
