 What's a Muramatsu worth?
Author: oboesax

I have an older Muramatsu flute I bought when I was in high school, around 1974 or 1975. It says the serial number is 7175, but no model name is given. I'm going to get it overhauled so that my daughter can play it, and was wondering about about how much it is worth today? Thanks.

If the year you say is correct it should be a solid silver instrament. These are worth alot if they are in good condition. I would have to say 1,500+. But take this with a grain of salt. I am a highschool clarinetist doing alot of research to decide on what flute i should buy.

The broad answer to your basic question is "$1000 to $100,000". Older Muramatsus tend not to fetch a HUGE amount on the used market because of changes in scale and specifications (for instance, only the higher-end models used to have French pointed keys, and now they all do; instruments with Y-arm keys are worth less than their pointed-keyed brethren). Perhaps you could post some photos of it for us?

Don't sell you instrument short. I think Muramatsus are fantastic, second to me only to Miyazawas, which I play. These are new instruments of course, but I would assume the older ones are just as good. Have you thought about getting an appraisal from a reputable flute specialist?
