 pad spuds falling out
Author: jazzydlr

I recently had my 1050's Haynes repadded with JS Gold pads. Within a short time two pad spuds fell out. I have had this flute for 50 years without a problem. The repairman offered to resolder all the spuds. When I received the flute back in the mail, there was allready one pad spud off. He then contacted JS engineering who said he should use staybrite sil solder and flux. Anyone had a similar problem and solution?

This is pretty common on older flutes, when the repair tech was re-padding the instrument he had to have know the spuds were loose, and just decided to ignore it. If he really is a quality repair person he should fix your flute correctly and make sure all of the spuds are properly secured in the flute key cup.

AND if he didn't know what kind of solder to use... well, that's pretty questionable... I'm surprised/skeptical he would be able to install such a high-end pad and NOT know how to solder. Soldering is a very basic skill, there's no excuse or reason for this to have happened in the first place!
