So I'm checking the tuning on my bassoon and most of the notes in the mid-range are sharp. The stock (no name) bocal I'm using in stamped "1." I get a Fox #2 bocal, which should be longer, right? So it would lower my pitches, right? Well, it didn't--it made them sharper! I compared the two bocals, and the #2 is shorter than the #1!
How could this be? My teacher said something about Fox bocals being "one number off," but wasn't sure. Anybody know anything about this? Thanks.

What you have been told about Fox lengths is true when compared to Heckel & some other brands. Heckel 1 = Fox 2. However there is no standard length for bocals.
