The book says to use one of the left-hand thumb keys, but that just gives me a high Eb at best.
Anybody have a better idea?

Since no one answered my question, I had to find out the answer myself!
What you do is put down the three fingers on your right hand when playing the D, and keep them down while you trill to the E with your middle left-hand finger.

Good for you for doing all the spadework to find the answer. Since the board seems kind of dead at the moment, perhaps a few of us newbies will have to try and revive it by soliciting some of our bassooning friends to join. Do you have any? I don't....
I hope I can remember that great-sounding fingering when the time comes (if ever) that I need to use it!

Well, wouldn't you know it - we pulled together a bunch of Christmas music yesterday for a concert next week, and there it was, in the Ukrainian Bell Carol - the D to E trill, for 6 measures, no less!
Of course I had forgotten the fingering by this time but this morning was browing through this forum and saw your posting again. Hopefully this reinforcement will make me remember the fingering!

You're welcome--but I actually didn't have to do too much research. I just asked a bassoon-playing friend of mine who I happened to run into and he knew it off the top of his head.
A lot of great things come out of this forum. I'm very glad it's here.

The standard trill is play your "high" d and lift your middle finger for the e. You can get more resonance if you also use the Bb key or Eb resonance key with the fingering if you need. Be careful talking to us proffesional bassoonists because we don't consider that a high D. That's an octave higher and there's a great fingering for that too !!! I will try to keep up on the questions like that that I could easily answer for anyone that has fingering questions
