Occasionally when our community band plays for school children, our conductor has me show my instrument (this is what a bassoon looks like, kids) and asks me to play a few notes so they can hear what it sounds like. I usually play the first couple of phrases of the Teddy Bear's Picnic, which kids love, but the rest of the band is getting sick of hearing that one. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Doesn't this answer kind of depend on the age of the kids your talking about? Should be around elementry or lower right (I just realized that that's kind of a broad age range)?

I think the most obvious answer would be Dukas' "Sorcerer's Apprentice" from Fantasia. I don't know a child alive who doesn't know that melody!

Yes, I have the music for that one and have thought it might work. I could do the first phrase. It would be great to have a few so that the rest of the band wouldn't be rolling their eyes and saying (hopefully to themselves) "Not that again!"

I have found that they enjoy whatever you play, as long as you don't go on and on. I have played short themes from Sorcerer's Apprentice, Munster's TV show, Baby Elephant Walk, Mozart Concerto, movement 1 of The Lord Of The Rings by De Meij (concert band), Andante and Hungarian Rondo, second movement of Jacob concerto, etc. If I'm the one giving the demonstration I will play one part for low or melodic and a second part for fast or high.

Those suggestions sound great, Dave. What are the two you mentioned after Sorcerer's Apprentice - Munster's TV show and Baby Elephant Walk? They sound like just the thing. Are those the proper names (I remember the TV show but don't remember the theme)?

The Munsters was a TV show from the 1960s.

The Baby Elephant Walk was written by Henry Mancini for the movie Hatari and features the clarinet playing the melody but bassoon makes sense.
Depending on the ages of the audiences I like to use TV or movie themes they might recognize. There are hundreds of websites with themes in MIDI format.

Even though I grew up in the 60s, I became a fan of the Munsters only after I became an adult. I've noticed that the bassoon has a lot of solo work in the background music during the show.

How about Funeral March for a Marionette? ( Gonoud?) AKA
for you old timers, the Alfred Hitchcock TV show theme. I doubt kids today are familiar with the tune, but it certainly works on bassoon.

Thanks, FrankM and Marcia. I don't have either of those but should try to get them. Last week when I got my new bassoon (hooray!) the band director mentioned it in band and said, "How about playing a little something so we can hear it?" and I went completely blank.
