I will sometimes clip the corners rather than the length of the tip. The effect is similar - it removes some tip from the overall balance and increases resistance, but it does not affect pitch. Sometimes it will decrease response to articulation.

I usually choose to do it when a reed is otherwise ok but the sound is too bright...
