 learning to make reeds
Author: plclemo

How do I go about learning how to do this? Are there books or instruction sheets available? What about video? My teacher used to make her own and those of all of her students but she doesn't anymore now that she found another reed-maker to buy them from. The reason I'd like to learn is that the store-bought ones are running around $15 each. That is quite steep for something that is inferior quality.

There are books, there are videos, but NOTHING beats a good teacher.
If your teacher doesn't pass on this skill, perhaps she knows someone who might show you the ropes.
I would recommend at least 2 lessons plus a follow-up.
Be ready to lay out about $150 or so to start (tools, cane).

The Jay Light book on reedmaking is about as good as any and better than most. My teachers gave me hints that were valuable but I could not find a teacher who would focus on reedmaking.

Four years with one teacher were great, but I later concluded that he was a little unsure of his capability in reedmaking and gave relatively little advice, despite his making 10 to 20 reeds a week for other students. He had switched from W scrape to American scrape in the middle of his career and didn't seem to feel comfortable with the American scrape.

One late famous player and reedmaker told me that "I can teach you to play the oboe but I can't teach you to make reeds!" His reeds are still marketed by WW&BW. Good luck!

Find a teacher who will make you reeds and teach you how to make them.

Buy reeds from reputable sellers online, the reed reviews website which you can easily find through google provides a comprehensive list for american style reeds. I encourage reed making, but i am also against it....

Make reeds ..................

But have a realistic time frame for becoming proficient.

Reed making is a journey. You must have the motivation for the trip.

You will need many years of practice ..............much trial and error ............ the books are just the foundation.

You also will learn about cane, shaper tips, staples, etc .... all which impact upon reed outcomes. And there will be costs associated with buying the necessary equipment ....

The result are personalized reeds for you .... and you do not have to settle and work with a reed that just isn't quite right for your oboe, repertoire, and style.

Are you a craftsman? You do like challenges? Do yo have the time? Do you have a curious disposition? Can you handle frustration well!?

If yes ................ go for it.

You won't regret it.

When it comes to buying tools, Charles Double Reed has a great kit that includes a Landwell knife, everything else you will need for reed making (except a sharpening stone) plus some cane and staples which aren't the best, but fantastic for learning on as you don't have to outlay lots on cane you will probably do irrepairable things to initially. :)

I have been learning how to make American scrape reeds this year, which I have enjoyed, but my professor wants me to stick to playing on my own reeds, so next year I will start making short scrape. :) Have fun!

I taught myself to make reeds using a combination of books, and occasional advice from pros I met over the years. I'm pretty proficient now. I lived miles away from the nearest teacher so I had no choice really.

The best book I can recommend is "The Reed Maker's Manual" by David Weber and Ferald Capps. This was the break-through book for me. It it clear, organized, has excellent illustrations, careful descriptions and photographs of reeds to compare with your own.

Critically, it takes you carefully through every stage of the process from shaping, tying on, clipping, scraping and finishing the reed. It gives you "exit criteria" for moving from one stage to the next with simple tests.

The book itself is spiral bound so it always stays on the right page as you work - there is an accompanying video which I have never seen.

That said, there is no doubt you will make MUCH faster progress if you get yourself a teacher! But the book is a great reference.

Also excellent is the Jim Mason reed making video (two discs) available through Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Best,

And don't overlook Martin Schuring's site at Arizona State University. It's a wonderful compendium of advice on all things oboe...
