This thread just reminded me of an oboe one of my students had, purchased against my advice, about 20 years ago (argh! the time flies). The band director had money to spend for oboes, and there were three lovely Fox instruments for $1350 in the big city nearby, which I had tested. This is just before Fox went up in price, what a deal! But they insisted on getting not one but TWO King oboes for $1500 each. *sigh*
These are horrible instruments, but the worst thing about them was the adjustment screws did not actually go through - they were just on the surface metal, with no back coming out (hope you can understand this). So they were decorative only. And (against my advice again) the BD sent these nasty oboes to his local repairperson, who may have seen oboes before but was no expert. He drilled holes through, voiding the warranty. There were many problems with these oboes, and when I left that situation they had spend weeks in repair, multiple times and I think my best student was able to play a one octave G scale (badly). What a shame! I wonder if those oboes are still there rotting away...
