Does anyone have a downloadable excerpt from this piece. The opening excerpt that is. My highschool orchestra is going to play next year and i wanted to get started early. If you don't have a downloadable excerpt perhaps you know the notes to the opening bars. Thankyou. :}

I assume that you mean the Baccanale from the opera by Saint Saens "Samson and Delilah" It should be readily available, there are a quite a few sites one could suggest you go to, but I doubt whether the sites are Legal (as far as copyright law is concerned) but you could try searching for it on Google and may come up with a legal mp3 site.

I believe the excerpt is in the Vade Mecum of the Oboist. I'll check to make sure tonight.

Do you mean the transcription, or the actual piece for orchestra? I have the transcription, and I would be happy to scan and send it to you. It is a gorgeous piece, the college orchestra (symphonic, with trumpets/flutes/clarinets and what not) with a fantastic oboe solo. The beginning is quite technichal, and might take some time to learn to play fast depending on how good you are. Considering that upper-woodwinds must cover the first/second violen parts. But other than that, it is great.

There is a rather long excerpt (a complete movement) from Samson and Delilah in the vade mecum, but it doesn't identify what movement it is. It has an interesting eastern sound to it and if there is only one big oboe part, this probably is it. I was going to suggest purchasing the Vade Mecum for the excerpt as there are so many interesting and rather full length excerpts spread throughout that behemoth of a book.

Thanks. My teacher has it. I will ask her if I may look at tommorow during our lesson. :}

I’ve found the complete orchestral score online before. Perhaps try that? Or the Vade Mecum has it too!

Ray, long time no see! Hope you're doing well.

Um, you DO realize that you responded to a 17-year-old thread, yes? :-)

Best,
