Stuffy Middle D on Cor Englais/English Horn
Author: oboe_chris

Hello all

I have been having some issues with the middle D and associated notes (Eb and C#) on my Cor. It's a mid-1970s Marigaux 930. The notes sound a little stuffy which is the best way that I can describe it!

Any advice would be wonderful!

With best wishes
Chris

How does it sound if you lift the 1st finger? If the sound is better but the pitch is high, you might have an obstruction in the half-hole key vent...best take it to a qualified oboe technician to clean/adjust.

Do you lift LH1 off completely or roll LH1 down?

If you lift off and your cor hasn't got an adjustment to set the venting of the split top plate pad so it barely moves (but the pad still opens by a mere crack), then it's over venting.

If you roll down to release just the upper part of the split top plate, then the diamond aperture in the pad cup could either be furred up, filled in with excess shellac or it could also have been enlarged.

Thanks for the advice. I have made an adjustment, it the key under the top plate moves, not the plate. I think I’d solved it, but then sometimes coming in on Eb is a bit odd and it jumps up an octave. I will probably take another look.

I left rather than roll, rolling makes a better sound I think, but it’s not part of my playing habit.
