 How to finger Db5 - Eb5 - Ab4 - F5?
Author: OBleon

I have encountered this problem in Ab major scale for several times. Normally, I would use left Eb and switch to right Eb swiftly, if the passage is not really fast. I just wonder whether most people do the same thing or they will slide from left Eb to left Ab. I also think right Ab might not be doable since I'll have to get to F in the end. However, is it really impossible to use right Ab or I just need more practice?

Right Ab should be doable in my opinion. Or slide from Db to Eb in the right hand, use left Ab and right-hand F.

Do you mean where you have to go from E flat to A flat, as in an arpeggio. If so, I hold both the left hand keys down together, as the A flat will not open if any keys below that position are pressed. I have always done it this way, and was taught this in the distant past. In a straight scale, I struggle to see where your difficulty lies, so perhaps if you can clarify.

Two ways I do it:

Db - right, slide to
Eb right
Ab left
F right

Db right
Eb and Ab both on the left
F right

Agree with oboist2 and Dane. I teach the Eb and Ab together method, since most students will instinctively slide Db to Eb. Although by this stage they are probably used to me hounding "right Db to left Eb!" so it's time for them to get confused again ;p
