I recently heard for my first time a recording of Mahler's 3rd Symphony in which the oboist honors the instruction "hinaufziehen" in Movement IV. I've heard American oboists simply slur the intervals and had never thought that a gliss was something an oboist would be asked to do.

As a clarinetist visitor, I'm curious now about how you do the gliss (or "smear" if you prefer) on an oboe. The notes in question are in one place [D5] - [F5] and in two other spots [F5] - [A5]. There's also a place for English horn to slide [F5] - [A5]. It's a standard discussion on the Clarinet board thanks to Gershwin's gliss in Rhapsody in Blue, which is much longer, but the execution sounds similar.

Another question that I want to ask is whether other composers ask oboists to do this. If so is Mahler's "hinaufziehen" the term they use or do they use standard Italian? Does "hinaufziehen" occur in anything else Mahler wrote for oboe?

The only way that I know to smear between notes is with an open ring oboe. I play a plateau system Loree, and for me "hinaufziehen" is impossible.
