Cor anglais / English horn High notes fingering

Hi All

I am play Holst "The Planets" in the local Orchestra and it has the following notes which just sound bad and wondered if there is better fingering for them other than oboe fingering.

High C sounds not to bad (is my worse oboe note) As x00|x00 and 2nd Octave key
High D Flat sounds really light and unstable 0xx|x00 low c key
High E Flat sounds lost like mouse squeak 1/2xx|000 low C and G shape key

To top it off I think its Oboe and Cor are about the only instruments playing then and it just stands like ____ ____!!.

The Cor Anglais is a Lore'e about 6 years old and plays very well in all but the above notes.

Any help much would be great.

Thanks Nicholas

Try the short fingerings for altissimo C#/Db and Eb to see if they're any better.

C#/Db - oxx|xoo

Eb - oxxG#|ooo

The last time l did Cor in Planets l used 3 different reeds: A nice free one for Mars and the other noisy Tuttis, a better one for more exposed bits ... and an oboe reed for those high notes at the start of Venus. Works a treat on my cor, though you might get some odd looks...

Thanks Chris
I have tried the short fingerings the pitch is sharp i will try adjusting the c key to right hand 2nd finger key. Currently it’s adjusted to be just touching when the c key is pressed.

Thanks Marcus
I will try the different reeds over the movements the high notes in my score is the last movement Neptune. Changing reeds in the movement would work as I have 4 bars rest of 5/4 andante from high notes to back to earth cor notes.

Thank again Nicholas

For high E flat, try using 1/2xx low B key | oxx -- best fingering for pitch and resonance on my English horn and oboe.

Yes Neptune of course ... you'll find the oboe reed doesn't seat very well on the crook, and looks far too long, but it works ...
All the best.

Hi all thanks for your help

What I did was adjust the screw for the Low C key link to mid left hand key about a 1/5 tighter of a turn and using cigarette paper to test that the c pad still had the dominant pressure, And also there is Low c key link forked f key screw that was way under adjusted.

And end result was in tune high notes that sounded ok for high notes.

Thanks Nicholas

Be sure you adjust the correct screw on the low C key on cors if they have two fitted to them. If they have just the one screw, it's to adjust the RH mid fingerplates as on oboes.

On most cors (1), the one (B) on the touchpiece arm (in the same place as on oboes) is to adjust the closure of the forked F vent to give the correct venting of the altissimo notes and doesn't adjust the RH mid finger plate.

The one (A) that's fitted on the arm much further along the key barrel (next to the Eb touchpiece) is the one that adjusts the closure of the RH mid fingerplate, so that's the one to adjust.

Some cors (2) have two adjusting screws on the low C touchpiece arm right next to each other - the outer one (A) nearest the RH3 fingerplate is to adjust the RH mid fingerplate and the one going through the touchpiece arm (B) regulates the closure of the forked F vent.
