I know there are so many forums, such as the ones on facebook for oboe topics, but lets please keep using this one as it is very valuable a resource, and once gone, is lost forever.

I feel like a lot of the professional musicians of this forum have stopped posting here. Posters like cjwright, oboehotty, etc. don't seem to be posting much on this site any more.

Yes it is a great pity - Sometimes I pose a question, just for the hell of it, to try and stimulate conversation. I have had a few great questions answered though, and it is always appreciated. I think these days a lot of people are using the all purpose facebook which has taken over ....

Rather than Facebook, I feel like there is a lack of posts/answers of much breadth or depth in the forums nowadays.

Howdy,

I am new here and I come from in Berlin/Germany.

I play oboe since 30 years for pleasure but think on an acceptable experienced level.

After all I make my reeds complete alone with Michel reedmaking machines.

I use a pre-goucher and a goucher (Innenhobel) but finishing with handcraft only in a german/french style

It would be very interessting to hear about the fundamental other wise of oboe-playing in the USA (more flexible, brighter, and loree or laubin standard.

Here in Europe espc. in Germany nobody knows really whats up with US-Oboe-players/-ing.

I for my part play oboes from Moennig/Adler and friends of mine plays Ludwig Frank.

So far
wish youall a fine day
warm greetings
Maxe

Hi Maxe,

I suggest that you post your above entry separately in a new post with a "Subject" such as "German and American Oboe Playing" to get more visibility and discussion. Meanwhile, I think you will find this article in IDRS by Allan Vogel interesting comparing the French, German, and American schools of oboe playing -- https://www.idrs.org/publications/controlled/Journal/JNL6/vogel.html .

Regards,
Tom

I was unable to find any Facebook group except one where people just posted pictures of reeds. Is there a comprehensive group that I missed somehow?

I am certainly glad this forum is still here. I have learned a lot from this forum. See how I say "this forum" instead of "you guys",,,cause I don't want to get all mushy. I got involved with other horns and became frustrated with reeds, but I'm back at it again.

I don't want to sound negative, but the forum is nowhere near what it used to be.

No it isn't and I think Facebook groups are the reason why. I see there are a few posters who are in the oboe groups too on facebook. Also I do not know why, but I know a woman, a veteran oboist from the UK who has tried every which way to join this group, without any success. She has even emailed Mark Charette a couple of times and got no reply. I think she has probably given up. I wonder how many others have had trouble joining.

That's unusual... Is there a technical issue with the site?

At the same time, many many professional oboists who used to be extremely active on this forum have simply disappeared from here. For example, their used to be an oboist by the profile name of cjwright whose answers were extremely helpful. Now, it seems that this forum only has amateur players. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, undeniably, the advice of professionals has something that the suggestions of amateurs don't.

Everyone who emails me gets a reply. No exceptions.

I believe you have been misinformed.

I have seen the same thing in horn and tuba groups. My observation is that the advice of high level professionals (here) is perceived the same as advice from those who are struggling with the same technical problem, because the newbie needing help can't tell the difference, and those dealing with the same problem will parrot what their section mates say (who can't do it either) or what their band director said (who can't do it either.)

I've seen famous brass players dissed by high school kids, and yeah, they leave. I think people also tire of giving the same advice over and over, once again having 10 high school kids (this is the horn and the tuba group, not the oboe group) giving the same bad advice to the poor person asking the question, while the famous competent person giving wonderful advice, a free lesson over the internet, is basically drowned out.

Simple speaking, I feel like the content of the forum isn't very interesting any more. All the posts now are essentially along the lines of "Should I buy this XXObscureBrand oboe?", "I don't know why my keys aren't working", "Playing XX piece in local community band". It isn't so bad to have some posts like that, but when all the posts have become something along the lines of that, it simply isn't as interesting any more. It would be awesome to hear some actual musical discussion go on in the forum.

It would be nice if we could reach out to oboists to join the BBoard. I know at one point, Eugene Izotov (!!!!) of the SF Symphony was briefly on this site, and it would be awesome to have professionals/ more oboe players in general on the site to promote discussion.

Dear Mark, was not meaning to malign you in any way, but my friend in the UK is not one to misinform me, but she may been challenged on her computer. I have asked her for clarification, but she did want to join, and would be a worthy contributor. All the best, Geoff Pearce

I do, from time to time, post on facebook on some of the oboe pages and double reed pages that the site still exists, and can only hope that some more members are forthcoming.

Dear Mark - I have sent you an email via this page with the details of my friend who has tried to join this forum. I did not hear anything back from you, and nor did she get any follow up. This was a couple of weeks ago. if you did not get my email, then perhaps something is wrong with the system. I have publicised this forum on Facebook on oboe pages and there is no point if people cannot join.
Apart from that, thank you for all the hard work you have put in keeping these things up and running.
