Hello fellow oboists,
I noticed that there are two types of cork wrapped Chudnow staples- the CA and the Sierra staples. What is the difference between the two? What kind of tone/ pitch/dimensional differences do you guys notice in the two?
Thanks,

I have used the Sierra staples for years. One time I was sent the others by mistake. I had ten staples and not one produced a reed that played well for me. I'm sure it had nothing to do with the quality of the staples but for me they were completely different than the Sierra. I didn't do much research to see the differences.

Hearing about Shawn's experience is fascinating to me, because I used the Sierra and CA staples basically interchangeably for several years. According to Mark himself, the only difference between the two designs is a slight beveling at the tip of the CA.

Hmmm... What is the effect of beveling/ chamfering the tip of a staple?

I won't pretend to understand the physics of it, but I guess I had a very slight preference for the CA staples. I noticed that reeds made on Sierra staples were somewhat more likely to be saggy in pitch. But I will stress that these two types of staple had the same fit on my MCW mandrel.
