I had no problem cutting the tip with knife until my eyes no longer see the small things clearly. So cutting a sliver of the tip straight became very difficult.
I looked for a tip cutter. I could not understand why a simple tip cutter is so expensive: over $200. Recently I came across the name Prestini.

They offered a cheap version ($40) and expensive one ($120). I bought a cheap version. I thought it is about the right price for what it does. It turned out It is as difficult for me to clip a sliver as I would with a knife. I exchanged for an expensive one. I thought it is a bit expensive but comparing to others, it was a steal. It turned out to be pretty good. I just had to make a little mark on the reed holder where to align to the length mark.
I thought some of you might like to know...

Hi,
I have been using a Rieger tip cutter for many years. Besides the cost ... I really don't understand why everyone doesn't use one. I can slice the thinnest piece of cane ..... It is a wonder and it automatically has one blade shorter than the other.

It turned out that Prestini tip cutter looks and functions almost the same as the that of Rieger on the photo. I first tried with dry reed. It worked like a charm. Great! Then tried wet and relatively thick reed. It worked OK. Cut surface was not as clean as I like.
Final test... I tried a wet finished reed. I just needed to clean up the tip by cutting very small sliver. It failed rather badly. Burrs ... I had to clean up with knife, which is what wanted to avoid in the first place. I guess very thin wet bamboo piece is too rubbery for the cutter.
I guess the blade is not sharp enough and blade and cutting block is not as tight as it should be. I am returning it...

I never had a problem as you describe. There may be a big difference in the quality of the 2 tip cutters. The Rieger is extremely sharp .... and that's after 6 years of use!

You are right! Rieger does better. Wish Rieger has the screw length adjustment like the Prestini model. I would be able to move the reed holder's position with much better precision.

I use one of the Reeds n Stuff ones and am very happy with the results - would not go back to using a knife or single sided razor blade again.
