Chudnow E vs Chiarugi E vs Winfield staples

Can someone tell me the differences in the Chudnow Oboe E staples, Chiarugi Oboe E staples, and the Winfield NW-01 staples? They all look similar and wanted to know how this translates into reed sound/performance.

Also, in general, what is the difference in the excavated (E) staples vs the solid (S) staples?

I can't comment about the non chudnow staples. I have played on both the S and E chudnow. Didn't care for the S at all. It just seemed really non resonant, like having all that mass at the base dampened the vibrations. The E s I like a lot. They float on o-rings in the reed well. The brass tubes are a little trumpety, but the gold ones (which are a little heavier) are great. Geometry is same as the Sierra staples.

You should give them all a try and find out for yourself. The staples are different for every player and different instruments. With all the variables you're already dealing with while making a reed, it is difficult to make a judgment and only you yourself can determine what works best for you. It will take a long time before you can reach a proper conclusion because you might not know if the reed was bad because of the staple or because of the cane.

Some oboists report that the E staples cause "rattling" because of the space between the staple and the reed well. Different oboes have different reed well sizes too, Rigoutat oboes tend to big, Loree tends to be smaller.

The Chudnow mandrel also fits the Chudnow staples really nicely (no surprise there). I also find the Chiarugi adjustable staples very interesting.

Mark also sells Gualco staples on his site too. Similar metal staple but it has a grenadilla liner in the staple to make it less "trumpety."
