Reeds - How often do you replace them?
Author: saraho

Hi,

Just wondering how often do you replace your reeds? Do you replace them after a fixed period of time (e.g. 2 weeks) even if they're still playable?

Thanks.

I replace them until they're no longer comfortable to play on. But really, there is no magic number that you should throw them out. How the reed was made and the strength/quality of the cane will really determine how long it lasts.

Reeds that are made over the course of one week would last longer than a reed made in one sitting because the cane has had time to settle in. Reeds that are more resistant will also last longer. It also depends on your embouchure, I like to bite so my reeds can quickly become closed down after a few days of playing.

I make my reeds on the longer/more resistant side because I bite. When the reed starts closing down, I clip it a little, move the heart back and I can use the reed again.
