How the frightful world makes me a better oboist....

NEW BLOG POST:
This also touches the delicate issue of amateur musicians stepping on the toes of professionals: no fear of that with this kind of unpaid - unpayable, maybe - work that pays HUGE dividends spiritually and psychologically as well as artistically while returning the spark of life to people.... if only for an hour: better than no hour at all!

Very moving article Robin and I admire your ability to see possibility everywhere even with the daunting issues of pain which could lead one to giving up so easily.

After many years in music teaching in secondary school in the UK (11-18 year olds!) I had a breakdown and stopped playing for many years. I've recently reconnected with music through choir conducting, taking up oboe again but via a reproduction classical oboe (Grundmann) and learning cello.

I suffer from fybro myalgia and ME so it often feels like I should stop but the glorious moments are worth it and the feeling that keeping a positive connection with things is good for oneself and others around. I think people appreciate the SPIRIT with which something is communicated especially when vulnerability is not so hidden or covered up.

BY the way, now that I'm playing the classical period oboe I don't touch my XL very often, the feeling of freedom from all that metal is liberating-of course half-holing (and degrees of partial holing!) and finger precission are an issue on the period model, the sense of the sound being 'fully yours' is really joyful and a greaty human warmth present in the sound and I love the 'non-tempered' trills -that remind one of the eastern origin of our instruments!

Great reading your article Robin, another lift to my spirits -which is , I think, what we're really hear for (despite what politicians tell us!).
