Aloha,

I came across a Buffet Oboe but cannot find a serial number anywhere. The piece is marked in addition to the Buffet Logo and the letter C. Additionally on the bell with C. Fischer New York. The only number I could find on the instrument is 023. I have attached some photos and would be extremely happy if someone could give me some pointers.

Thanks
Andres

Definitely an antique, probably pre-1900.

Aloha,

Thank you for your reply. But the C. FIscher New York markings seem to indicate that it was exported into the US between 1910-1930. That is at least what the clarinet's forum suggested.

Thanks
Andres

That could indeed be the case. Perhaps I should say the design of the oboe belongs to the late 1800's. There were much more advanced oboe by 1900. Are you planning on using his as your primary instrument?

Aloha,

No I am not a musician - I am a Broker for Art Antiques Jewelry and Collectibles and this was in one of the estates that I am currently working on. Before I can sell the piece I need to know what to describe it as and what the ballpark valuation is. But so far I am in the dark.

mahalo

You might check with Peter Hurd who deals in oboes a lot. I have a Buffet oboe and English horn set of the same vintage that i believe could sell as a pair for about $1000 to a collector or museum, mostly for the English horn value. I could possibly expect to sell the oboe for a few hundred, but no performing musician would likely buy it for use in public.
