 Grad school questions
Author: Oboe95

Hello all,

I've recently begun looking into options for grad school and there are a couple of professors on my list that I am unable to find much about online. Has anyone here studied with Mark Ostoich or Robert Sorton? Any replies would be helpful as I continue to weigh my options. Thanks!

You would be hard-pressed to find a better teacher than Robert Sorton. He did both his Bachelor's and Master's with John Mack, and played Assoc. Princ. oboe in the Detroit Symphony for more than a dozen years before accepting his position at Ohio State. I studied with Sorton for my Bachelor's, with lessons "on the side" with Mack, and can tell you that Sorton is every bit the source of knowledge and expertise that Mr. Mack was. Their approach to the oboe and musicality were nearly identical. Also, Sorton is an incredible reed maker and technician (with regard to both instrument repair/maintenance and gouger servicing). I haven't been part of the OSU scene for many years now, so I can't speak for the rest of the current faculty or for their ensembles. For me, in the early 90's, my OSU experience was very much on-par with any of the "top notch" conservatories at the time. Robert Sorton's studio is one of the best-kept secrets of the oboe world!

Thank you so much for your reply! I wasn't really able to find any recordings of him, except for two of him playing in ensembles. I really enjoyed his playing from what I could hear. I'm hoping to go for a sample lesson this year.

I studied with Mark Ostoich. I did my masters with him....GREAT teacher! I wish I would have recorded every lesson with him so that I could refer back! I still go,back at least once every couple of years to catch up with him and have an impromptu lesson and make reeds with him. Fantastic in all respects!

Not that it means much, but he has at least five oboists who are sitting in the top five military bands in DC/West Point, at least 8 students from the last 15 years who hold college positions at well-known universities, and many many many playing in symphonies, both regional and national, all over. As a side note, he subs regularly with Cleveland and Pittsburgh Symphonies, not to mention the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra,me here he holds a regular position.

Fantastic guy and amazing teacher! I highly recommend him!

Hope this helps in your search...
