... with Guy Légère and Christoph Hartmann at Howarth in London on Monday the 13th of April 2015.

"Test the new Légère synthetic oboe reed prototype - this is a chance for you to give Légère your feedback on the design and response of this revolutionary reed before it is put into production."

Interesting. I'll see him in three weeks so I guess I'll get to try one!

I'm interested to hear about this. Our state symphony clarinet players have started using the new Legere reeds on odd occasions to see if anyone can pick it. So far, no one has. My husband, a clarinetist, was so against the idea of a synthetic reed, but these guys convinced him it was the real deal. I can't tell the difference when he plays on it.

Interesting to see if they can convert this to a double reed situation. I suspect they will have more success with bassoon than oboe, but who knows?

I hope they work and are successful as that will remove one of the biggest hurdles of oboe playing.

I played one at last years IDRS conference. Very good for short scrape players....a bit too resistant for me. However, the tone and response quality was quite acceptable. I am waiting for the long scrape version.

I wonder if they'll have some cor reeds at this event? I'm looking forward to it and will book my train ticket very soon - only problem is I'll probably miss a good chunk of it as I won't get there until sometime after 11:30am.

Only oboe reeds were on trial - and lots of them!

I personally found the ones best suited for me (Christoph Hartmann tried one of my reeds and picked a Légère reed he felt was similar) were very responsive, but the tuning from high A upwards did tend to sag. The pitch could be lipped up but that would make it very hard going on the player if they had to do that for an entire concert.

Our observations as well as those by other players in similar trial sessions was noted so that gives a good account of the areas that can be improved on before they go on sale to the public.

As far as the tone goes, I thought they played and sounded great - nice depth of tone from the reeds that were picked out for me to try and some others were much brighter, so they should appeal to most players. So once the flatness up top has been sorted out, these reeds should be a winner.

I just like the idea of a workable oboe reed that doesn't need to be soaked to make it work, especially in situations with loads of bars rest followed by coming in cold where a cane reed is very likely to let you down, but these reeds aren't reliant on having to be kept wet in order for them to work immediately.

So I personally thank both Guy Légère and Christoph Hartmann for their time today and really hope these reeds will be a success.

Any more news on these? I'm waiting on them to take up oboe again. Was a total failure with reed making.

I think they're expecting them to be launched sometime in September.

Cool. A friend gave me a sample she had somehow acquired, and it did not sound like a cane reed at all. Perhaps it was an early version.

I got an email from Legere saying the European scrape reed was going to be introduced at the upcoming IDRS. Since there is no way I can get to Tokyo, I'm wondering how to get a hold of one of these. The email said that distribution will be done in stages and that my area may not have them soon. Since it is a Euro scrape and I am in US, I suspect I will have to manage to import reed(s) if I want to try them in the near future. I'm not getting any younger, would like to return to oboe, and do not care which scrape I play on. Any suggestions on how to acquire these once they are available after IDRS?

You could always contact Legere and see if you can buy reeds directly from them - at least the postage from Canada to the US will be far less than if you have to buy them from elsewhere.
