How long should a reed last, and how do they usually die, barring an accident?

I have a couple reeds with about 10 hours of play time over a few weeks, and they seem to play for a few minutes and then close up. I'm just wondering of they're dead?

Thanks

One reed in my concert reed box is 3 years old... another great reed is being recycled after one performance. If a reed gets 2 weeks play then that is great.
