Has anyone tried this brand new Reed Geek tool specifically for double reeds? Seems to have new edges and comes with a handle. Was contemplating getting the original reed geek but this doodad looks tempting (I'm such a sucker for double reed paraphernalia). Can anyone attest to whether it's as sharp as a normal reed knife?

I have not used one myself, but looking at the videos posted by Brian Charles Music, it is obviously strictly a scraping tool. I doubt it will take a big enough bite to use as a roughing tool as a knife would be, but for finishing work it could be easier to control than a knife.
The cutting edge appears to be a contoured face meeting a flat face. If so, then sharpening would just be a matter of lapping the flat face.
I'm going to have to buy one and try it out...

I bought one and have been using it. So far, I'm not impressed. When you do any sort of scraping you have to turn everything at a weird angle in order to see overtop of the squared blade to see or feel what you are scraping. Still trying it but so far not a fan.

I handles one in a music store ... too crude for any fine work.

Good to know. Is it useful for taking off the initial bark? Although I already use a beveled knife for that purpose already. How about emergency tweaking? I had hoped to find a "pocket" finisher for minor tweaks while out-and-about (and airplane-friendly).
