It appears that this is good time to buy an European oboe. It is like getting 30% discount.

Yes, but wouldn't you need to travel to Europe and buy one directly, as the US dealers would keep the old prices intact, more or less?

It's a bad time to buying anything from the USA. The Australian dollar is now only worth 76 US cents.

Oh, Barry, tell me about it! I really want to get a cor but at those rates, and with very little available locally, I'm not sure it's going to happen any time soon.

And it's most likely to get even lower :(
Probably down to 65 cents or thereabouts.
There goes my idea of visiting the American South West again :(

I will be in Paris in June and was thinking of dropping by the Loree place of business. How difficult is it to buy an oboe abroad?

Just don´t forget that it is taxes in the oboe prices in Europe that you shouldn´t pay, so ask Loree how you should take care of it.

Well, Adam Smith would assume that there is competition between US dealers, and that they would cut their prices as the costs of imports fall, in an attempt to get more market share.

But there is the matter of "sticky prices" and other market imperfections. I do see that some firms are "authorized dealers" of some brands; this may constitute a barrier to entry and an opportunity to exert some price control.
