Hi all,
I don't want to sound silly; however, from my experience it seems more difficult to have successful reed outcomes in the winter and summer than in the fall and spring. Maybe the cane just responds differently in the cold and heat and the dry and humid.
Just scraped a few reeds ... they just don't respond well. Same cane and approach .... only difference winter in my reed room.
Comments ............... Almost enough to make you a bit nuts~!

Likewise when buying and playing in brand new wooden oboes - best time is Spring when humidity levels begin to rise and they'll be played in by the time Winter sets in.

It makes me glad to live where I do, where the daytime temperature variation is about 15C throughout the whole year!
Also, we don't treat our indoor air all that much (apart from some air conditioning on those 40C+ days). Doors and windows are freely left open and we don't use forced heat. That dryness I experienced indoors in winter when I was in Illinois affected me all over (skin, respiratory, etc), so no surprise it affected my reeds!

I agree that the seasons definitely make a difference though I have personally found the opposite to be true, the transitory periods of weather produce reeds that die quickly. I also live in Minnesota where the winters are long and the autumn and springs are unpredictable. I find that the differences in how the reeds need to be made require re-adjustment depending on the season as well.
